The accused has been identified as M Rajendran. Police sources said the girl was on her way back home from a shop around 8pm when the the accused intercepted her. He dragged her to a spot behind a ration shop and sexually assaulted her, a police officer said. Some residents of the area noticed him abusing the girl and rescued her.
She returned home and told her father who then lodged a complaint with the AWPS.
Police arrested Rajendran and booked him under sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. He was remanded in judicial custody on Monday. The girl was sent to the Mahatma Gandhi memorial government hospital for an examination.
