The new daily record is over a 1,000 more than the previous one of 19,800 plus. The surge in infections has taken the total case count in India past 6.25 lakh and the death toll touched 18,213 with 379 deaths in the last 24 hours.
Apart from these four states, Andhra Pradesh (845 new cases), UP (817), Gujarat (681) and Bihar (478) registered their highest jump in infections, while Bengal added 649 and Assam 408 cases to their tallies.
After crossing 17,000 two days ago, the death toll went past 18,000 with 379 fatalities recorded on Thursday. Nearly 3,000 deaths (2,917) have been reported in the last seven days alone.
India added a record 22,045 Covid-19 cases on Thursday, taking the country’s total caseload to 6,27,023, just a day after the count had crossed the 6 lakh mark, as per data collated from state governments.
Tamil Nadu recorded 4,343 cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, taking the state’s overall tally to 98,392. Of the fresh cases, 2,027 were in Chennai; the city has reported 64,598 cases till date.
As many as 3,095 patients were discharged following treatment and 57 deaths were reported. With 57 fatalities, the state’s death toll rose to 1,321. Among the deceased, 12 had no comorbidities.
Meanwhile, four youth cleaning a septic tank in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district died of asphyxiation on Thursday. The police said the incident happened at a house in Chekkarakudi, a village about 40 km west of Thoothukudi town.
